As part of the first phase of Moisture, an experimental rainwater ‘distribution & capture’ system was designed and constructed by Capparelli and Willey between October 18 and October 27 of 2002. Invaluable assistance with labor and design was provided by Mark Tsang, Peter Fend, SE Barnet, K. Chenoweth, Jill Ohora, Russ DiFiori, and Krista Walters in addition to an enormous crew of Pasadena City College Students from the Art and Science Block Program. [ > ]



Using approximately 200 feet of subsurface piping connected to specially designed fiberglass receiving forms, fabricated by Capparelli, the system is centered around a 4 ft. X 4 ft. artificial aquifer lined with a 4 millimeter membrane and filled with 5 layers of sand and gravel. The system is intended for long term use and will be monitored carefully over the coming years to see what impacts it may have on the site’s ecology. [ > ]

Inspiration for the project was found in a series of email communications with Russian researcher Anatolily Koshulko from 2001. ‘Storage of fluids’ in artificial subsurface structures was the focus of our discussion, and so tests were made in the Morongo Valley in the Spring of 2001. Capparelli’s forms entered into the process during the final stages of design. The forms would allow water to flow in and out due to pressures imposed on the artificial aquifer.

A year long observation has yielded much information. Increased vegetation is apparent as is the presence of small animals and insects who seem to benefit from the added moisture retained for extended periods after the inconsistent rains.

The expected vandalism has occurred and at the present time we are planning extensive maintenance of the project during the coming years. [ << ]
